With the team looking to improve on last season's league finish, & push for promotion, we entertained Hanney United with our first home game of the season. With the early exchanges mainly coming from the boys in yellow & blue, Tim Young found the back of the net on 25 mins. Soon after Luke Hammond opened his account after Hanney failed to clear a corner, it was looking like 2-0 going into half time, but as the visitors pushed in the closing moments of the half, Hanney pulled one back right on the stroke of half time when a low cross wasn't defended properly & it was popped in from 5 yards. The visitors then came out at the start of the second with some purpose quickly adding to their tally to even things up, & soon added a third! With the boys on the back foot, some resolute defending was needed, & with the game slipping away from them, Tim Young popped up to bag his 2nd of the the match from 12 yards to level. This was how it was set to stay but not without Hanney having the chances to take all 3 points.

Our newly promoted Div 3 Champions, started their first game in Div 2 with a 2-0 win over established Kingsclere. Goals by joint player manager Lee Newport, and then younger brother and youth coach Jamie Newport (pen) - gave the first X1 a stonking start to the 08/09 campaign at Loop Meadow. |

The new, young and very inexperienced A side was at home to Challow Reserves. The boys showed fantastic commitment, determination and class as they turned out an unbelievable 15-0 win (it was 10-0 at half time!) in their first EVER game. No less than 7 goals were scored with some fantastic forward play from Kevin Oakes, which was a very impressive debut. Nick Guiry and Tom Wapshott bagged a hat-trick each, and a classy penalty from left wing Matty Chomyn was slotted home with ease. The moment of the match was in the last few minutes, when captain and centre back Nick "Crouchy" Townsend made a run from his own penalty box and dodged the tired Challow defence, rounded the keeper and slotted home an amazing solo effort....... Bring on the rest of Div 5! |
